The Nudge

Sadie isn’t shy when it comes to telling me (or anyone else for that matter) that she wants something. That something usually is attention. If anyone starts petting Sadie, it’s very hard to STOP. Why? Because she won’t let you. The second you stop petting her, she nudges your hand with her nose (somewhat forcefully!), in an effort to say, “Ummm excuse me. You need to keep petting me. Thanks.” She’ll also do this if she just sees someone’s hand sitting around, looking bored. “Maybe you want to pet me, since, you know, you’re not doing anything!”

She has even come up with a way to signal for more petting if she is laying down, drifting off to sleep, and can’t be bothered to nudge with her nose. In these instances, she’ll push your hand with her paw. She’ll sometimes even open her eyes a crack while she is doing this, to make sure you know she’s not messing around. “No, really, you need to keep petting me.”

I find this so funny, especially when she does it to unsuspecting strangers. I mean, really, I don’t blame her. I would do the same! It probably feels nice having someone pet you non-stop!! Sadie cracks me up. Does your dog do this, too?

I have some videos and pictures of Sadie to post from this past weekend...I just haven’t had any time to upload them! Soon, I promise. Hope you’re all doing well!

  1. Caleb does the exact same thing! He's not is not super clingy, so when he decides he needs some petting or attention, he is very insistent about it. Hahaha!

  2. I can't say that Gibson does this.. he really is not a petting type of guy :) He likes butt/belly/neck scratches, but never asks for them. He IS bossy though. He'll poke me w/his nose when I'm doing dishes, or just bark or whine constantly if he wants to play :)

My parent's dog, Coal, does the same thing as Sadie though. She will nudge nudge nudge you if you stop petting her!

  3. Laurie, my Henry does this. If you're sitting in a chair, with a hand dangling, he will even , very gently take those fingers in his mouth, and pull them down to him ! Crazy cute !

  4. Ahaha, Philip does the exact same thing too! Also, when he is just chilling and you so much as grace against him (even if just with your foot), he immediately falls over on his back and his eyes scream "Rub my belly!"

  5. sammy does, but not very often. he loves new people! he just slides right over and sits practically on their feet in order to tell them, "hey! i'm here and adorable!"
he does however have the reverse. he has his own little bubble when it comes to sleeping. a good 90% of the time he does NOT want to be touched or bugged while sleeping. this includes at night in bed and naps around the apartment. he will just roll over and give a big sigh. if you dont get the hint, he will eventually get up and move with an even bigger exasperated sigh! i cant help but instigate it sometimes, it's too cute.
i should try to get a video of it sometime and put it on my blog! haha
that's awesome that sadie will use her paw! i don't blame her, i try to instigate back/neck rubs the same way! she's too smart...and cute!

  8. hi sadie !

i know another corgi that does the exact same thing... but even more extreme. She gets a bit testy and even barks in your face to tell you she wants you to pet her more. haahah.

bailey on the other hand is the oppsosite. he usually doesnt come to be voluntarily to be petted. and its hard to get him to come to be petted, but hes good with that if im sitting down on the sofa or bed. otherwise, if i am standing or sitting on hte floor, hed rather not be petted (i think it has something with me clipping his nails...). but anywhoo hahaha i wish bailey was more cuddly!

  9. Thanks, everyone, for sharing your similar stories! It's too cute how dogs get their feelings across without talking! (Or maybe talking in their own barking language!!) Sadie definitely barks at me, too, if she isn't getting enough attention. Silly doggies. Gotta love them!

  10. haha yes Jasper nudges me with his nose a lot! If I'm on my computer he often nudges my legs to try to get me to play with him. In bed he will nudge my head to wake me up. It's soooo cute :)

  11. Lindsey: Haha too cute! When I had a laptop, Sadie would stick her head under my arm as I was typing. Making it rather difficult to do anything!

  12. I so relate to everyone's posts about communicative, "get your attention" dogs. ALL of ours do these things. Even Sadie, our Border Collie will quietly come into another room (one without OC in it... say she is in the Living Room and I go into the bedroom for a few minutes. It is hard for her to follow me now, dragging her little hind end. She will if I'm gone more than 5 mins. or so) Anyway, Sadie CAN'T be petted while OC is in a room with her, so she will go into the other room and "demand," with the nose nudges or paw on the leg, some attention. Poor girl, she is so good... AGAIN, OC lives up to her name of Ornery Cuss even in her handicapped state! Corgis are stubbornly wonderful little dogs!

  13. I love how everyone's dog has its own cute little personality, but they all seem to be very similar in ways too!
