Sadie’s Mom

That’s me! The writer of this blog!

I thought I’d take a moment to properly introduce myself to everyone and to tell you a little more about me. My name is Laurie, and I am 28 years old. Currently, I work as a proofreader at a small marketing/advertising agency. Since I graduated college (University of Florida) in 2003, I have been working as a proofreader or editor of some sort, both in the agency and book publisher settings. As an English major in college, I always thought editing was what I wanted to do. I’ve always loved reading and writing, and it just seemed like the right career for me. I guess like most things, you don’t really know what you’re getting into until you try it. It’s not that I hate what I do. I do enjoy editing/proofreading. But I get bored easily. I need a job where things change on a daily basis. And I also feel unfulfilled with this type of work. I need to do something that matters in the grand scheme of things.

I am in the process of working toward a new career. This past Spring, I started graduate school. I am getting a dual degree in Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling. Ideally, I would really like to work in some type of rehab facility that deals with alcohol and substance abuse. So, I’m on the way to something that will (hopefully) matter more (to me and others). However, it is going to take me a few years to finish my degree, especially because I will have to do four different internships. But it’s all worth it. Or at least I think it will be in the end!

I currently live on Long Island in the great state of New York! I moved here last August. Previously, I was in Boston for about five years. I grew up in Florida though, and lived there through college. I don’t really know what state I’ll end up in once I’m done with my Master’s degree. I’ve realized now you can’t plan for those things in advance; you just have to see where life takes you. I never thought I’d live in Boston, especially not for five years, so who’s to say where I’ll end up next. I do like Long Island, though!

As I mentioned, I love reading and writing, but I also love theater (seeing it, not acting in it!), TV, movies, and have started to become very interested in photography, as you know. I try to get into Manhattan every once in awhile to see a play or musical. And I’ve been known to wait after shows to meet celebrities. (In fact, I have a whole album on Facebook documenting these moments!)

Hmm what else? I’m an only child, and I never wanted siblings. I’ve always had pets growing up (cats, dogs, rabbits, turtles, fish, hamsters), but Sadie is the first pet that is truly mine. I used to be a swimmer and a gymnast (not a major competitor in either though). My 10 year high school reunion is in September, and I’m on a mission to lose weight (down 18 pounds so far!). I’m shy when I first meet someone, but will open up pretty quickly. My favorite smells are my mother’s cooking and perfume, Sadie’s paws, morning dew, and crayons. I love all types of music, but especially love Sheryl Crow. (In fact, I have “I Shall Believe” tattooed on my inner left wrist, which is one of her songs.)

That’s a good place to start, I think. If you have any questions, feel free to ask! :) Thank you all for reading our blog. I love meeting other animal lovers!

P.S. If you’d like to add me on Facebook, here’s the link!

  3. wtg Laurie on the weight loss! how did you do it? good luck with your reunion, I made it to one, my 15th, and decided "one time be enough" that is what my niece would always say if she tried something and didn't like it. This year is my 35th reunion (geesh I'm old, LOL) but not going; hope you have a good time at yours!

I enjoyed reading about you. I always wondered about what was involved in proofreading. Not that I want to change careers, but that or editing did seem interesting

however, I think a counselor especially with mental health can be very rewarding (and very tough too dealing with some of the problems presented, believe you me both my kids were in counseling at times). But I think you will be a great one!!!

    thanks for sharing about you!!

  5. Awesome, thanks for sharing!! I'm class of 2000 too, and I added you on FB, so if you see a Julie you don't recognize with a profile picture of a sleeping corgi, that would be me and Caleb! :-)

  6. Betty, thanks! I reduced my calorie intake and have been running/walking on the treadmill 3-4 nights a week. It's definitely going well! I was shocked I could keep it up, but I am seeing results, so that's motivating! We'll see how my reunion goes lol...it should be fun for the most part at least! I do enjoy proofreading, but it definitely gets boring and repetitive sometimes. That just drives me crazy! I will probably always do freelance proofreading work on the side, cause it's easy money! I thought it would be fun to share a little bit about me; I'm glad you enjoyed it :) Thanks about the mental health counselor thing! I hope I will be a good one!

Karen, thanks! Glad you liked it :) I guess I'm brave! Thanks :) I try!

Julie, thanks! Yay for all these class of 2000 people! hehe. I added you back on FB :)

  7. ok, way late on this, but still excited to read a little more about you. it's easy to get so caught up in the pups and not realize how little we know about the corgi moms! haha. ive always wanted to see the east coast. actually, any coast would be fine. my cousin was married to a navy man in florida when i was around 5 or so, and that is the only time i have seen any ocean! the east coast seems so fun and fast paced, way different than where im at. i love the midwest, but i would love to see something else, and ny is way up there on my list!
good luck with the career changes. i started my first 2 years of college in something i loved in high school and realized it wasnt for me after that. so i restarted (basically) with a new degree track. i feel like ill never be done, but really really want to do something other than retail!!

    ps.....i added you, too! :)

  8. Thanks, Bri! Glad you enjoyed it!! :) I added you back! Good luck with your school work! I guess we'll both be done eventually!! :) It will be worth it! I have really only seen the East Coast! I've been to CA once, but that's it really. I've travelled all the way up the East Coast though. I wish I had more time to travel!

  9. Hey Laurie!

It's fun to read this, because I *sort* of know you, but enjoy other information!

Next time I'm in NYC I should let you know! My friend from college, Liz, lives in Brooklyn, so I try to get out there every so often! I didn't have Diggity when you were here in Boston, but I do enjoy your blog! I think he has a bit of Corgi in him, because of his ears and I see a bit of his temperament in Sadie. :)

Still at Pearson right now, but projected to move into Editorial soon! YAY!!! :)

Anywho, I enjoy this blog when I get on Twitter and see you've posted; but now that I've FB friended it, I'll be able to read more often! :) Glad you're enjoying NY, and good luck with grad school!

    Danielle

P.S. Anytime anyone makes popcorn in the microwave, I think of you! :)
