Doggie Breath

Now, I know dogs have bad breath. But Sadie's is pretty nasty. I brush her teeth, but I don't know if I do it often enough. And it seriously only helps for a little bit. I know sometimes she gets into the cat's litter box and eats their poop (gross, I know). She had stopped this for awhile, but I have discovered her doing it again. Obviously that would make her breath smell disgusting, but even when she doesn't do that, it's rancid!! The vet says her teeth are good; she has a little bit of tartar on her back teeth, but nothing crazy. The vet suggested a cleaning before it gets a lot worse. (I'm also scared about getting her teeth cleaned, since they have to put them under anesthesia. I'm paranoid.) Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions to help with her stinky breath! Is this a corgi thing? Or just a dog thing in general? I've seen breath freshener liquids at the pet store that you add to their water, but not sure if that is good for them, or if it even would help. Any suggestions would help!

  1. I don't know anything about dog breath, but I've had the cats' teeth cleaned. I think the process is essentially the same. I was freaked out too, but my vet did a blood panel beforehand to make sure they would handle the anesthesia well, and it was just fine. If you're really nervous and your vet doesn't do the blood panel, ask for one. They're expensive, but the piece of mind is worth it.

  2. Hmmm that might help me calm down slightly haha. I'll still probably want to puke until she's back in my arms, but that's good to know. Thanks!

  3. I got Whiskey some of the breath freshener liquid that goes in the bowl. It help very minutly, not a huge difference overall. Thats all the info I have on the bad breath issue

  4. Hi Laurie,
I just came across your blog via "corgitails". Sadie looks very much like my daughter's 10 month old Corgi, Willow. Corgies really are amusing and she keeps us laughing most of the day. I can totally understand your apprehension about the anesthesia ~ I'm a nervous wreck too whenever they are in for a procedure, although my three pomeranians have always bounced back from dental cleanings quickly. As far as Sadie's breath goes, I use Honey Peanut Butter Gourmet Dental Treats which make the teeth slippery so plaque doesn't stick to them as easily. They are made by a holistic vet so they don't contain any chemical preservatives. The website is
I've been using this company's petfood, treats, and supplements for over a year and it has definitely made a huge difference in my aging pomeranians who used to have digestive issues and used to vomit frequently.

  5. How often do you brush? Just curious because Gibson has ridiculously stinky breathe as well, but I only brush once a week. I don't really understand why it's so bad either.. I'd like to hear what others say! :)

  6. hmmm...Jasper still has good puppy breath. I haven't started the brushing thing yet, but I really should get to that soon.... I know what you mean about putting her under. Don't think I could do it either.

  7. Hi

You don't have to do anything fancy to clean your dog's teeth. We can do Amy's once a week by sitting on the floor with our legs straight out, flipping her upside down between our knees (sometimes this takes two people, one to flip each corgi, the front corgi and the back corgi), and going after the tartar with a regular dental scraper. Followed by a bit of chicken-flavored doggie toothpaste on a disposable toothbrush. We got a package of 50 one-time-use preloaded brushes for $20. Her breeder preferred an electric toothbrush. She seems to enjoy it! She's had it done every week since she was born, so almost 4 years. You can do all her toenails too, clean her ears, and check the health of her underside at the same time.

    Good luck!

  8. Karin, welcome and thank you for the suggestion! I will check those treats out. Sounds like Sadie would enjoy them :)

Kelly, you brush more often than I do. I'm bad about remembering, honestly. I probably do it about once a month. I don't know why their breath is so rancid!! Haha.

Lindsey, hopefully Jasper won't get the nasty breath that Sadie has haha. Not sure why it's so bad!!

Rachel, thanks for the suggestion! I have an electric toothbrush for Sadie and a regular doggie one. She isn't such a fan of the electric one when I turn it on...Maybe I will try flipping her over like that...because right now I just do it with her standing up and can't really get in there! Thanks :) (Also, I WISH she'd let me cut her nails, but that will never happen haha.)
